Baojun Yep

2026-09-26 20:50:00

The Baojun Yep (Chinese: 宝骏悦也) is the debut all-electric mini SUV launched in 2023 by the Baojun brand under SAIC-GM-Wuling. Co-developed in close collaboration with DJI Automotive, the vehicle is pitched as an "urban fun-oriented lifestyle SUV," targeting younger buyers seeking personal expression and trendy lifestyle appeal. Key highlights include its rugged, squarish "boxy" silhouette, a segment-exclusive "Car-watch" tailgate display, and the Lingmou intelligent driving assist system co-developed with DJI. As of 2026, the Baojun Yep range has expanded into two distinct body styles: the standard three-door model and the five-door Yep Plus, with prices ranging from RM72,800 to RM105,800.

Design Language

The exterior of the Baojun Yep adopts a rugged, angular "boxy" styling language, setting itself apart from the sea of rounded, cute city EVs. The front fascia features a gloss black enclosed grille flanked by highly recognisable four-point LED daytime running lights, complemented by an off-road-style standalone front bumper and muscular bonnet strakes for a purposeful stance. Along the sides, chunky scratch-resistant wheel arch mouldings and side steps accentuate its rugged character. Around the back, vertically stacked taillight clusters flank a side-hinged tailgate, crowned by the standout external "Car-watch" display screen. Functioning much like a smartwatch, it allows drivers to display customised text, graphics, or messages, significantly elevating its novelty factor. With a wheelbase of 2,110 mm, the vehicle's ultra-compact footprint makes city commuting and tight parking effortless.

Powertrain and Performance

The Baojun Yep comes standard across the range with a rear-mounted permanent magnet synchronous electric motor in a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) configuration, outputting a peak power of 50 kW (approx. 68 PS) and 140 Nm of torque. Tailored primarily for urban driving, this setup delivers lively off-the-line sprint from 0 to 50 km/h, though top speed is capped at 100 km/h, which limits high-speed overtaking performance. Energy is supplied by a 28.1 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack, utilising Baojun's proprietary Shenlian Battery with a MUST integrated structure to deliver a CLTC-rated pure electric range of 303 km. Under DC fast charging, a 30% to 80% state of charge (SoC) takes around 35 minutes, while AC charging takes roughly 8.5 hours. A Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) power supply function comes standard, catering to outdoor camping and leisure needs.

Chassis and Handling

Underneath, the Baojun Yep rides on a front MacPherson strut independent suspension paired with a rear rigid solid axle non-independent suspension. Structurally akin to traditional off-roaders, the solid rear axle offers high structural integrity for light unpaved surfaces. However, its control over vertical rebound and body roll in corners is less supple than multi-link or torsion beam setups, which compromises rear-seat ride comfort over rough tarmac. Electric power steering (EPS) provides a tight turning radius of just 4.6 metres, making U-turns and tight manoeuvres remarkably nimble. A minimum ground clearance of 150 mm ensures sufficient clearance for everyday urban and suburban driving.

Cabin and Features

Inside, the Baojun Yep is equipped as standard with a dual 10.25-inch screen layout consisting of a digital instrument cluster and a central touchscreen infotainment display. The interior is trimmed in leatherette upholstery with a leather-wrapped steering wheel and a rotary electronic gear selector. Infotainment is driven by the KiOS smart operating system, supporting 4G connectivity, Bluetooth digital key, keyless entry and start, continuous voice recognition, GPS navigation, and OTA firmware updates. Convenience amenities include standard automatic climate control with a PM2.5 air filter, four USB/Type-C charging ports, and power-adjustable front seats. The three-door model offers a boot capacity of 715 litres with the rear seats folded flat.

Safety and Intelligent Driving

On the safety front, the Baojun Yep features a high-strength safety cage construction. Standard active and passive safety features across the range include dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control System (TCS), Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), and rear ISOFIX child seat anchor points.

Intelligent driving assistance serves as the car's primary competitive edge within its price band. Higher-spec variants are equipped with the Lingmou Intelligent Driving 2.0 Max suite co-developed with DJI (Zhuoyu Technology). Utilising dual 8MP binocular stereo cameras and a BEV perception fusion architecture, it delivers mapless highway navigation assist (covering automated ramp entry/exit and intelligent lane-change overtaking), urban memory pilot, and full-scenario automated valet parking (completed in as fast as 30 seconds). A 540-degree panoramic camera system with a transparent chassis view is also equipped.

Market Performance and Reception

Following its market introduction, the Baojun Yep generated substantial buzz for its quirky, rugged styling, though actual sales volumes have remained modest. Monthly sales of the three-door model have consistently hovered below 1,000 units, while the Yep Plus recorded just 692 units in April 2024.By 2026, Baojun introduced the 2026 2nd Anniversary Edition, retaining the 50 kW motor and 303 km range setup while lowering the entry price to RM72,800.

Owner feedback is noticeably polarised. Praises focus on its unique retro-rugged styling, the customisable interaction of the Car-watch tailgate screen, the Level 2 driver assistance capabilities, and exceptional urban agility. Conversely, the three-door model suffers from an extremely tight rear seat, often described by owners as "strictly a two-seater plus luggage," highlighting its practical limitations.Additionally, the 100 km/h top speed ceiling and the firmer ride from the rear solid axle suspension remain deciding factors for potential buyers. Ultimately, the Baojun Yep represents a classic case of style over sheer utility—blending rugged off-roader aesthetics with electric propulsion to carve out a distinctive, niche position in the compact EV space.
